Talk about a ‘power play’

What a year for hockey in western New York!

If you’re a long-suffering Buffalo Sabres fan, like me, you’re probably trying to restrain your enthusiasm as playoff season nears. As the current points leader in the National Hockey League, the Sabres are clearly one of this year’s favorites to take home the Stanley Cup. Of course, championships have proven illusive to sports franchises from Buffalo, so let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. For now, I’m just enjoying the ride.

And how ‘bout them Tigers? After sweeping Air Force in a two-game home stand this weekend, RIT’s men’s hockey team is poised to become champions of the Atlantic Hockey Association in only the team’s second season of Division I competition.

This Friday, Feb. 16, at Frank Ritter Ice Arena, these two great teams join forces for a different type of power play. RIT will present , featuring a guest appearance by Derek Roy. In his second season playing center for the Sabres, the Ottawa native has quickly become one of the team’s many young standout performers. Roy will be available to sign autographs, and the Sabres’ mascot, Sabretooth, will be there as well to greet fans.

With the excitement being generated by these two hockey teams, I dare say events like Sabres Night create a synergy that only heightens RIT’s profile as an emerging Division I powerhouse. Now let’s hope that both teams finish their 2006-2007 campaigns by celebrating championships.
